The Metal Toy Soldiers of | Wm. Hocker, Proprietor |
Quite separate from the regular British Army, the Indian Army of the late 19th Century, Indian troops under the command of British officers, consists of separate forces corresponding to British administrative areas of the sub-continent. The Presidencies of Bengal, Madras, and Bombay each have armies, there is a Punjab Frontier Force and several regiments, including the large Hyderabad Contingent, serve directly under the Government of India. The armies are supplemented by the Royal Artillery. More experienced than British Regulars (and perhaps considered more expendable), Indian regiments, in particular the Bengal and Punjab Forces (see the North-West Frontier Campaigns), are often the most relied upon troops in many Victorian campaigns. |
